This 6,7 Kms circular trail through the protected landscape of Rocha da Pena starts at the base of this rock, following a dirt road, in a sharp climb to the top of the site.
It can be made by foot or mountain bike, but for this last you will need to be prepared as the trail is demanding.

Upon reaching the top, on the left you will find an interpretive table on Geology. Then you can head to the viewpoint at the northern end of the rock formation, the access being signposted there, where you will enjoy the view of the southern flank of Serra do Caldeirão.

Return to the main section and follow the plateau trail that offers magnificent views to the southeast, south and southwest, following the edge of the escarpment to the highest point of this rock (479m altitude), at the south viewpoint.

Here begins the descent that takes you to Penina, a small village where you can visit the mini-museum and explore the local architectural heritage with elements dating back to 1821. Follow a path parallel to the escarpment that will allow you to contemplate the size and grandeur of this element. natural way, to the place of departure where there is a fountain and a car park.

This rocky, limestone formation, in the form of a steep cornice, includes a plateau about 2 km long, reaching at its highest point 479 m in altitude.

Due to the natural conditions, it has a microclimate that is home to unique species of flora and fauna.

Along the way, you will see plant species such as the albardeira rose, rosemary, thyme, rockrose, lavender, carob and cork oak. You can also observe the small mammals that live in this place, such as the badger, the mongoose, the fox, the hedgehog or the hare. The place is also home to colonies of bats and, in the small dams, wells or tanks in the area, amphibian species such as frogs and salamanders live. In addition to these, you will also be able to observe birds of prey such as the Bonelli's Eagle, the Round-winged Eagle, the Little Owl, the Golden Owl, the Kestrel or the Kite, among many other species of birds.

Rocha da Pena is located in the middle of the Algarve Barrocal, in the interior of the municipality of Loulé, localities of Salir and Benafim.
